Ice! Part 1: Duke Gardens

We rarely have enough cold weather in NC for serious ice.  Older son and I headed to Duke Gardens last week just to check out the ponds and fountains.  Strangely, there were only three other cars in the parking lot Thursday morning.  I guess the below-freezing temperature kept most visitors away.

It was so quiet and peaceful!

I haven't walked to the bridge since my surgery, and it's father than I've walked so far... but I just had to get a picture.

There was a clear spot by the duck beach, and that's where they all were - except for the heron. [OS]

I had gotten back to the van, put my camera away, and was stretching my legs when I heard an ungraceful "squawk."  I turned around, and the heron was flying low above the parking lot.  He sat on this sunny bank, three spaces from the van, for quite a while.  He didn't care if I got near (though this is zoomed in).

For people who are looking for a place to do some serious walking and meditating, Duke Gardens looks perfect place. It is a little too early for flowers to start blooming, but give it a few weeks and I am sure the garden will be filled with color.
