WCPE

Nothing like starting a blog, and then everyone getting sick.  I managed to post a few things yesterday after my kids got well, and before I got today's sore throat.  So, not much writing today, just this article from today's Raleigh News and Observer,  Duty and Balm which starts:

"Every evening, at 7:55, B. Elmo Scoggin leaves his Raleigh home and drives to Rolesville for his two-hour shift as the evening host of WCPE-FM's radio show "Music in the Night." The program starts at 10 p.m. But Scoggin is more than an announcer. He's a devoted volunteer. By 8:25, he has carted away the CDs of classical music played that day. By 9, he has collected the next day's selections and lined them up on a shelf in the recording studio.

At a time when most people are settling down for the night, Scoggin, who turned 90 last month, pushes his favorite high chair to the microphone, slips in the disc with the program's theme -- Jules Massenet's Meditation from the opera, "Tha•s" -- and begins his show.

Twenty-one years ago, after retiring as professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Scoggin began volunteering at WCPE. Simply put, he wanted to be of service to his community. A man of deep faith, Scoggin believes he has a moral responsibility to help others. He has taught prisoners, delivered meals to shut-ins and chopped wood for the poor. He still visits three to five sick friends each week.

But his work at the radio station not only fulfills his moral obligations but it also gives him spiritual succor...."

I've listened to WCPE the whole time we've lived in the Triangle area so I really appreciated this article.  And his story is an interesting one.

This is my favorite program on WCPE. His selections are lovely and the flavor of classical music I most want to hear. But I missed the N&O article. Interesting.
