We had a wonderful time kayaking the Haw River today. The weather was about as wonderful as you could possibly get in NC this time of year - 60's, brilliant sun, and a slight breeze.
Lately, I go back and forth between enjoying the familiar and really wanting to try something new. New won out this week.
We rented kayaks from the Haw River Canoe and Kayak Co. They were really wonderful to work with. We learned some great new tips about kayaking, and they gave us good advice for buying our own kayaks. They've also got lots of different trips you can take on the Haw. I had no idea that there were so many places to get kayaks in and out of the river.
We took the Red Slide Park to Swepsonville River Park trip. It starts out with a bang splash, particularly if you haven't paddled through many rapids (and if you haven't kayaked in over half a year!).
Here's a closer view of the rapids. You have to go to the left of the long rock that's a bit above and to the right of the center of the photo.
One of the guides from the kayak company was out in the water telling us where to go and helping if anyone had problems. I was glad that I got through the rapids okay - but then I went into some tree branches hanging over the water on an island at the bottom of the rapids. It wasn't a problem, though.
Speaking of take-out... we were hungry by the end. The Mellow Mushroom in Burlington is only about 20 minutes away from the park where we finished. I called younger son so he could look up the phone number for the restaurant, and we ordered pizza to bring home. This is the statue in front of the Mellow Mushroom.
