In honor of this week's NC weather, which was forecast to possibly beat record highs (but then didn't make it, at least here), this week's theme for the Tarheel Tavern is "Beating the Heat" - or "Enjoying the Heat" if anyone wants.
We start with Laurie at ...slowly she turned. She's finally turned on her central ac (she made it much farther than I did!), and was inspired to bake a mouth-watering Peach Blueberry Crisp (maybe we should all get together for a potluck lunch someday?).
Billy the Blogging Poet has been enjoying the heat while flying his streetplane - which looks like an interesting and profitable enterprise.
Kivi at Freelance Writing for the Nonprofit Community discusses how to "beat the heat" of deadlines as a writer and get more writing done in less time in Top Writer's Trick: Recycle Your Ideas and Articles.
Mr. Ogre, of Ogre's Politics and Views, has a totally on-topic post, Hot Tavern - extra points if you can help him identify it!
We have an ethnic divide in our house, other than the one between those of us who pass out in the heat and those who don't. Dear husband and older son love spicy-hot food - the kind the rest of us can't handle. Coturnix, at A Blog Around the Clock, gives some insight into why this happens and why hot food evolved in Hot Peppers and Hot Peppers - Why are they Hot?
Marcus, at Fixin' Healthcare, has been writing a series of posts, the Lifestyle Chronicles, on improving health by improving human capital and lifestyle. His post, The Lifestyle Chronicles - Culture, Character and Health, discusses the qualities of character that different American generations have had and how changes in character threaten our health.
Scrutiny Hooligans discusses Rep. Charles Taylor (R-NC) in Charles Taylor Doles Pork to KGB Connection:
Taylor keeps feeling the heat, whether it's the Jack Abramoff scandal, the GE scandal, the slumlord scandal, the Flight 93 scandal, the Savings and Loan scandal, the unpaid taxes scandal, and he somehow slides by, greasier than a fried pig. Not only does he slide by, he continues to win re-election. That's what I call beating the heat.
Justin, at The View from the Cheap Seats, reminds us that citizens can be as off-base as lawmakers with Friday Funnies: 3 minutes:
...the heat must have gotten to the guy in this video.
One of my favorite ways to beat the heat is to go hiking in the mountains, and Waterfall, from A Sort of Notebook, shares some beautiful pictures from her backpacking trip at Art Loeb Pictures and Tarheel Tavern.
Spiritblog writes about how to beat a different kind of heat, the heat of anger, in Listening for his call.
Erin, at Poetic Acceptance, writes about enjoying the day (with the help of air conditioning) despite neverending laundry in Salsa con Queso.
My post this week is about how some unexpected visitors helped me forget the heat.
Thanks to all who sent in posts! The Tarheel Tavern is in need of a host next week - if you can help out, e-mail Erin or Bora.
Great job, Laura! I'm looking forward to reading these - I turned the A.C. back off today, though! Environmental guilt.
